The most profound social experiment that’s ever existed
Marriage can be one of the most challenging things you ever do, but it’s also one of the most rewarding — so here are 10 things to keep in mind when you find yourself in one.
Marriage is a job
You have to wake up in the morning and choose to act out in love with your partner.
When they get on your nerves (or you get on theirs), or when you’re having a blast together, you’re making the choice to be there and be involved in the relationship.
No one can force you to show up and clock in. You’ve got to do it on your own; and if the relationship stems from a solid foundation, you’ll want to show up and do the damn thing.
Marriage can look easy from the outside, but once you’re in one you’ll see the imperfections and flaws that arise and understand how complicated it can really be.
You’ve got to work every single day to grow and build on your relationship.
I promise it’s worth it.
You need to love one another unconditionally
This means that you should accept your partner for who they are, without trying to change them.
It also means being there for them, even when they make mistakes. (And there will be mistakes, have no doubt…)
Unconditional love doesn’t mean you’ll always get along, or even that you’ll always like your partner; it means you don’t try to control them or manipulate them into being something other than who they are.
Unconditional love doesn’t mean you always have to like what your partner does, but it does mean that you can accept and forgive them for it. In return, they’ll do the same for you.
