Pauli Murray. Ever heard of her?

I hadn’t — but once I found a small piece of her story in the back of an old, fucked-up book in my grandmother’s basement — I needed to know more.

Once I finished studying her story, I had two immediate reactions:

How has nobody told me about this woman before?

and,

Why the hell aren’t we naming entire school districts after her?

Pauli was a Black, queer, gender-nonconforming lawyer, activist, priest, poet, and overall badass who was fighting racism and sexism before most Americans even knew what those words meant. She was out there laying the legal and philosophical groundwork for the civil rights and women’s rights movements decades before they became headline news.

Rosa Parks? Murray did it first. Lunch counter sit-ins? Been there. Equal rights under the law? She wrote the blueprint.
